This modern board game won the Spiel des Jahres award in 2001 and has sold millions of copies since then. It adapts perfectly to the level of any player, both veteran and new, and features a mechanic that may seem peculiar: there is no board at the start of the game! By placing tiles, players build the "board," which is different each time.

The rules are very simple: each turn, a player takes a tile from the box and places it wherever it fits (a road next to another road, a city wall next to another city tile, etc.). Each player then has seven figures of a different color marking their territories. When a player places a tile, they decide whether they want to also place one of their colored figures (called followers) on top of it. These followers indicate who could score points on that city, road, or monastery. When these territories are closed, the players who have followers on the territory score points. If there is more than one follower placed in a city, the player with the most figures placed inside that city will score points.

In Carcassonne, roads also score points, but in this case, there can only be one follower, although it's possible for two players' roads to meet during the game. When this happens, both players score points by closing this road. With a monastery, when the tiles cover its entire perimeter, the player with a follower on it scores points. You have to be careful, because only by closing a road, city, or monastery can you recover the tiles. Thus, throughout the game, you have to make decisions about whether it's worth adding another follower to a city, or whether it's better to place it somewhere else where more points can be earned.

Through this tile-laying and area-control mechanic, Carcassonne has become a worldwide success. Furthermore, since the tiles never appear in the same order and players always make different decisions, the game has a high degree of replayability. With rules as simple as placing a tile, placing a figure, and scoring, this game can easily spark competitiveness in any group of players. The Carcassonne base game also includes two mini-expansions: The Abbot and The River, which provide even more fun for players after they've played several games, adding even more complexity.

Carcassonne is one of the most beloved entry-level games into modern board games. With simple rules, it's quick to learn and becomes more engaging with each game. With innovative mechanics and a thousand strategies, the game experience is always different, while maintaining the fun at all times.
